Feathers Hotel, Ledbury, Herefordshire, England

The Feathers Hotel is a famous 16th-century drovers’ inn, situated in the main street of the unspoilt market town of Ledbury, Herefordshire. Since Elizabethan times, this famous coaching inn has dominated the town with its striking Tudor black and white exterior.

Originally known as The Plume of Feathers and dating back to at least 1564, it was small in comparison to what it is today. The first building consisted of the present day reception area and hall-way. The three bay windows, with differing architecture, still survive today from that original building, yet it was not until around 1603 that the third floor was added.

The greatest development occurred since 1970 when it was purchased by David Elliston, who still runs the hotel with his sons. The old stables were turned into squash courts, which were replaced in 1997 by the leisure spa and conference rooms. The popular Fuggles Brasserie was built at the back of the hotel.

The Feathers has acted as an Excise Office, a Corn Exchange, Assembly Rooms and in the 19th century, a cosy spot for the Gentlemen of Ledbury to play snooker. During the late 18th century the building was clad to remove all signs of its black and white exterior which was considered unfashionable. Fortunately, the cladding was removed in the early 20th century.

Staying at the Feathers Hotel will take you back in time, the ambiance warm and the décor filled with old-world charm. Come in form the cold and relax in front of the crackling fire with a hot pot of tea. The service and customer care is highly rated and the restaurant offers traditional local fare, with the best roast beef in town!  This is a beautiful building with a cheerful character offering a true Ledbury experience.

The hotel also boasts two beautifully decorated external self-catering apartments, namely Lanark House and Eve’s Cottage

The days of Royal Mail coaches ferrying the country’s post may be gone, but still The Feathers awaits the weary traveller stopping in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

The feathers hotel can be found at 25 High Street, Ledbury – just a hop down from its cousin, the Market House.
